New Year, New You

Happy New Year!

There is nothing like the New Year to reset the mental psyche. Time to get organized! Time to get healthy... time to get wealthy! Time to set some goals!

Yikes... when am I going to find time to do all this?

When the New Year rolls around, it's natural to feel a burning desire to DO more things (we sure do). And you know what one of our favorite mottos is? Go forth and conquer! We know you can do it... sometimes it's just a matter of when you'll get it done - that's why New Year's resolutions tend to repeat themselves from year to year.

Because we care about you and want 2012 to be your most successful year yet, please allow us to share this wonderful lesson we learned from Jim Collins, best-selling author and corporate researcher, and one of our favorite Management Guru's. You may have read one of his books; this lesson was taken from his book, Good to Great.

He writes:

"Most of us lead busy but undisciplined lives. We have ever-expanding ‘to do’ lists, trying to build momentum by doing, doing, doing - and doing more. And it rarely works. Those who built the good-to-great companies, however, made as much use of ‘stop doing’ lists as ‘to do’ lists."

Wow, what a concept! A "Stop Doing" list is just as important as a "To-Do" list! This lesson completely changed our mindset, which is why we felt it was important to share with you. Cut out the things that aren't advancing your goals (some you might find were actually impeding on your goals), simplify your life, and get things done.

That being said, we still recommend creating and using a To-Do List - we're actually huge fans of them and full-heartedly believe that writing things down will free your mental capacity to focus on the present (so would Jim Collins if that makes it more credible). In 2011 it would not have been unusual if you had come into our office and noticed a desk covered with post-its.. But in 2012, we're implementing a new and much improved system for task management - and we are loving it!

Try Asana - it's the iCloud for your to-do list. Create a username, access your to-do list from anywhere (even on your smartphone, you can download a free app!), make a workspace private to you for personal use, add fellow users to a workspace for team project management... it's really very nifty, we highly recommend that you give it a try!

Happy New Year, fellow friends - we know that you'll make it a great one!
